What to Wear for Fall Family Photos
Outfits can make or break a session. The right outfits can take your photos from “cute family pictures” to WOW, these are stunning. Don’t skip this part—it matters more than people think.
1. Coordinate, don’t match
Pick a color palette with 3–4 colors and build everyone’s outfits around it. You want everyone to look like they belong together without looking like you all bought the exact same outfit.
2. Start with Mom
Pick Mom’s outfit first, then build everyone else around her. She is usually the hardest person to dress, so once her outfit is figured out, the rest gets much easier.
3. Add texture
Texture photographs beautifully. Think knits, denim, linen, corduroy, sweaters, layers, boots, and soft fabrics. Texture adds depth and keeps outfits from looking flat or boring.
4. Skip tiny busy patterns and giant logos
Small, busy prints can be distracting in photos, and giant logos pull attention away from the people in the image. Simple usually photographs best.
5. Fall does NOT mean everyone has to wear orange and brown
You have so many options. Creams, camel, muted greens, denim, dusty rose, rust, warm neutrals, soft browns, and deeper earthy tones all photograph beautifully in the fall.
And please… don’t forget the shoes
You can put together the perfect outfits and completely throw the whole look off with the wrong shoes. Shoes WILL show in your photos. Avoid old athletic shoes, neon sneakers, Crocs, or anything that looks like an afterthought.
Choose shoes that actually work with the outfit—boots, neutral sneakers, loafers, sandals when appropriate, or simple shoes in a coordinating color.
Your outfits don’t have to be expensive or complicated. They just need to feel intentional.
A little planning before your session can make a huge difference in how your final gallery looks.
